Guess What's Happening Friday at Garfield!
Friday, February 18th, Rhodia is coming to Garfield to educate the 7th and 8th grade students on solar and wind energy. Rhodia purchased solar panel and wind energy science fair kits that they will assemble with the students. This fun, interactive activity will reinforce the lesson on using alternative energy. The students will incorporate this information into their Greenhouse design.
The Southtown/Star local newspaper will also be here to cover the story and photograph the students working together with Rhodia!

We're excited too!
Hello Garfield Elementary -
The staff at Rhodia Inc. here in Chicago Heights is really starting to get engaged in this project as well! Brenda Doucette-Carter went out last night and got 30 birdhouses and plenty of paint. Lori Hodges began to look into birdhouses for Purple Martins, Butterflies and Bats. She found out that Purple Martins come to Chicago Heights between June and July. They lay 2-7 eggs at a rate of 1 egg per day, and incubate the eggs for 15 days before the young hatch. The parents then feed the hatchlings for 26-32 days. At some point before it gets cold, the Purple Martins fly over 5000 miles to spend the winter in Brazil. Here's a website that is dedicated to the conservation of these beautiful birds, and it includes tracking their migration patterns. http://purplemartin.org/

Planting the Future Today
Rhodia, a local chemical plant in Chicago Heights, has partnered with Garfield elementary to offer the students an amazing opportunity. The students will be competing in an exciting contest where they will be researching and designing a greenhouse and a terrace. The students will also be incorporating exciting information about:
* Solar and wind energy
* Native birds and plants and
* Architectural design
Rhodia will judge the contest and pick the best design to build the greenhouse and terrace in Chicago Heights this summer. They will dedicate the finished product to our school!
This is a wonderful opportunity and the students are very lucky to be a part of such a big event. Both the students and staff are very excited about the project. We will keep you informed as this project unfolds!

Blog Creation Yeah!
Welcome to the Rhodia Greenhouse Project Blog! I have created this blog to chronicle the project with Garfield School in Chicago Heights School District 170 and Rhodia, a local company that is partnering with the school for the project. Rhodia, a local chemical plant, has asked the 4th through 8th grade students to research and design a greenhouse and a terrace. Rhodia will then pick a winning design and build it on their property. The students will be researching solar and wind energy, native birds and plants, and architectural design.
